"Sky Catcher"

Grimm-Schultz Farmstead, 35180 Old K-10 Road, Alma KS 66401

Artist: Carla Craven, Shawnee, KS

Laurie Hamilton purchased the Farmstead in January 2020 from the Leland and Cindy Schultz Family. Previous generations of the Schultz Family have occupied the site since 1930.

The Main House was started in 1875 and completed in 1880. The four contributing outbuildings were built around that same period.

The barn quilt was added to the outbuilding used for Agricultural use---farming and ranching in 2022

The Main House can be rented for day conferences, community meetings, or family reunions. It provides a residence for the current owner.

The buildings were made of local limestone and frame timbers.

In October 2020, the Grimm-Schultz Farmstead was added to the National Register of Historic Places as its own historic district.

Barn Quilt artist, Carla Craven, of Surfaces Designs in Kansas City

grew up on a dairy farm in Albany, Missouri, She loves and lives

the semi-rural lifestyle, and has a practiced eye for authentic detail.

Carla's barn quilt design is inspired by quilt patterns plus her own

imagination. The colorful barn quilt painted with colors of the sky,

will be an expressive welcome sign, and an identification mark for

travelers looking out for the design to find a particular family.

Stalking the Elusive Barn Quilt

It’s not exactly hunting, in the sense of bow or gun,

But it does involve a search, and it is a lot of fun.

It’s called a Barn Quilt Trail and they’re found across the nation,

As people seek them out as a tourist destination.

It starts with people choosing a nice quilt square design,

And painting them on panels in colors nice and fine.

Then those panels are hung on the side of barn or shed,

Where they’re available for viewing by the public, as I said.

And when there’s several in a region on a route that might entail,

It becomes what people now refer to as a Barn Quilt Trail.

It started in Ohio and the concept traveled west,

Where many quilts now stand as they await the traveler’s quest.

It seems there’s been a lot of action on the barn quilt front,

As people seek them out for a tourist barn quilt hunt.

You don’t need a hunting license in this quest to prevail.

A book, website or friend can guide you on the Barn Quilt Trail.

John Lettau is a retired California teacher who loved teaching geometric designs as an art

New Youngest Barn Quilter!

Nine-year old Taylor Bryant, rural Olsburg,

 assisted Connie Larson in painting this 4 x 4

to be displayed at Deep Well Veterinary Service.

The barn quilt is scheduled to be put up on the clinic

facing Highway 16 east of Olsburg next week. 

Taylor tapes and paints quite meticulously.

We look forward to seeing

more of Taylor's work!
