Chapman Barn Quilts

Barn Quilts of Chapman Kansas

Sheeran Park's Shamrock Shelter serves as the starting point for the
Barn Quilts of Chapman Kansas Tour. The project was orchestrated by
the Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail Dickinson County Representative, Lori Hambright,
along with the Chapman High School Art Club.

The Shamrock Shelter at Sheeran Park was replaced after the 2008 tornado that hit Chapman.  It is one of the 'safe' tornado shelters, sitting in the heart of the town and is the hub of community activities, including the annual (2015 - 106th annual) Labor Day celebration.

Artist: Lori Hambright
The wagon tracks barn quilt sits at the bottom of the National Historic Register Butterfield Overland Despatch/Smoky Hill Trail ruts. Several swales (or ruts) are still visible and quite deep as they descend from the top of Indian Hill on the west edge of Chapman. The BOD began in 1865 and was the 'highway' to the southwest before the coming of the railroad all but ended the travel by wagon. Chapman Creek was one of the stage stops, being the first one a days' travel from Fort Riley.

"Tennessee Compass"

"Kansas City Star Quilts"
Lucky Charms Quilt Shop, 405 N Marshall, Chapman KS 67431

Historic limestone building in Chapman's downtown district. The building was constructed in the late 1800's. At one time this was a café, in the 70's/80's it was the Village shop. It had a soda fountain, candy, and pool table. Local children would drop in after school. It was a flower shop, quilt/scrap booking store. In 2010 the owner of "Mother & Me" passed on. It was her wish that the store stay open and the love of quilting continue. Some of her customers came together and partnered, to be known as "Lucky Charm Quilts." The scrap booking supplies are gone, but the love of quilting continues.
