25 barn quilt enthusiasts attended the "Barn Quilt 101" class, sponsored by the Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail, on Saturday, and hosted by Ag Heritage Park. The class, taught by Sue Hageman, and assisted by Connie Larson, explained "barn block quilting," while giving the participants the opportunity to paint their own barn quilt block.
From this class, 24 new 2' x 2' quilt blocks will adorn the Flint Hills countryside!

Pioneer Bluffs Hosts Prairie Talk Near Matfield Green;
"Exploring The Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail" Program
Sue Hageman, representing the Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail, and nationally known barn quilt block artist, presented the program at the Pioneer Bluffs historical barn on Saturday afternoon, August 4th. The "Prairie Talk" program was attended by 40 promising barn quilt enthusiasts. Pioneer Bluffs was a perfect location to discuss barn quilts with their Pioneer Star quilt block displayed on the historical 1800's barn. Pioneer Bluff's quilt block, created by Elaine Jones and Susan Hague, quickly joined the Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail efforts. Connie Larson, also a Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail committee member, and President of Ag Heritage Park in Alta Vista, that also proudly displays a pair of quilt blocks that are part of the Quilt Trail, assisted Sue in the program. Pioneer Bluffs executive director, Lynn Smith, graciously promoted the event.

Reports On County Fair Parade, Abilene, August 1st
Lori reports that a few thousand people were along the parade route this year. Great Job!!

Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail
Offers Barn Quilt 101 Classes
Have you wondered how the
barn quilt blocks are made? Come learn how to make one and take one home
with you! The Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail is offering “Barn Quilt 101”
classes. Pre-registration is required for these classes, with the $35.00 fee
due on arrival at class. Each class will be limited to 12 participants painting
blocks. Sue Hageman, Riley, nationally known barn quilt artist will be
instructing the classes.
Ag Heritage Park, 103 S Main,
Alta Vista, will host a class, Saturday, August 24th, 9:00 a.m - 12:00 noon. Please call 785-532-8393 with questions
and to pre-register by August 17th for this class.
Lazy T Ranch, 2103 Zeandale Rd, Manhattan, will be offering a class Friday
evening, September 6, starting at 6:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required for
this class no later than Friday, August 23rd. Please call

The barn block will be made
using a 2’ x 2’ MDO (material density overlay) signboard already primed and
ready to draw your pattern and paint. The “kit” for the class will
include the primed board, tape, foam brushes and paint, all for $35.00.
The paint choices will be primary red, blue, yellow, green, black and white.
Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their own pattern or there will
be several patterns to choose from at the class. It is highly suggested
participants start with a block that will be simple using only two or three
colors of paint. The simplicity will allow participants to finish their
project at the completion of the class.
Instructor for the class, Sue
Hageman, who recently won the AccuQuilt 2013 Barn
Quilt Block Contest, loves to share her passion of barn quilt painting. She has
painted numerous barn quilt blocks that are displayed in several counties of
the Flint Hills.

Trail is sponsoring the “Barn Quilt 101” classes to encourage participation in
the art of barn quilt blocks, promoting agritourism and
rural pride through the 22 county region of the Flint Hills. Those interested
